It means “How are you, my name is Nasariah” in Chinese. “Language is the blood of the soul into which thoughts run and out of which they grow.” Said by Oliver Wendell Holmes, a former associate justice of Supreme Court of the United States. Having a second language helps you to communicate better with others. A new language is one of the most rewarding experiences for everyone. The easiest way to learn second language is to start at a very young age, the older you get the harder it is to learn. Learning more than one language can boost your brain power. Have you heard about Alzheimer? Alzheimer disease (AD) is a brain disease that slowly destroys brain cells. The disease will affect the areas of the brain that control thinking skills, memory and language. Believe it or not, speaking more than one language can prevent Alzheimer and delay the onset dementia by several years. According to researcher Andrea Mechelli, people who speak more than one language will have denser grey matter when compared to others. Grey matter contains the brain’s neuronal cell bodies. The grey matter involved in muscle control and sensation perception such as seeing, hearing, memory, and self-control. Statistics show that people who learn a second language before the age of 5 have 25% more grey matter than those who do not. How many of you can speak other language besides your mother language? Today I am going to actuate you the language that are worth to study nowadays. I personally speak three languages which is Malay, English and Chinese. I receive multilingual education in elementary school. In my opinion, Chinese and English language is the worth language to study nowadays. There are about 6,500 spoken languages in the world, but the most widely spoken language is actually Chinese and English language. Chinese language is separated into five main dialectical groups, which are Mandarin, Cantonese, Min, Wu and Hakka. Some of these dialects are limited on small geographic areas. But the most commonly-used more widely is actually Mandarin. While English language is separated into seven dialectical groups, such as British English, American English, Australian English, Canadian English, Indian English, Philippine English and Ugandan English. Currently, the most widely spoken English across the globe is American English or more known as United States English or U.S English. There are almost 60 sovereign states and 28 non-sovereign states that using English as an official language.

Chinese language has the greatest numbers of speakers which is almost 1,197,000,000 native speakers instead of English language only got about 20% or 360 million native speakers. According to a study by Wellcome Trust shown that Chinese language is much more difficult to learn than English language. Why is it recognizes as the difficult language? This is because Chinese language got almost thousand of character, dialect and a complex writing system. The Chinese need both sides of the brain to grapple with challenges of Mandarin, but English speakers listen with only half their minds on the job. Speaking more than one language may leads to many benefits in the long run such as easy when travelling, easy to get a job and can build our confidence.

Chinese language is Asia future Lingua Franca. China is replacing the US as the main trading partner, so that Chinese language will play an increasingly important role as a language for business communication. As you may know, Malaysia is Southeastern Asian country that is multiracial with different ethnic group living in one country. Chinese in Malaysia form the second largest amount after local people with around 22.6% population. Economics growth in Malaysia also has been conquered by Chinese people. In the other words, other Asians will not miss the opportunity to learn Chinese language.

While English language is the language for international communication. English is the most common second language in the world after Chinese language. English may not be the most spoken language in the world, but it is the official language of 53 countries and spoken by almost 400 million people all around the world. The British Council reported that around 2 billion people in the world will be studying English by 2020. Learning English is important as it enables you to communicate with global citizens easily.

It can improve your lifestyle especially on career growth. Have you ever searching for a job? Did you know that a huge number of companies in Asia are belonging to Chinese people? If you do, you must face an issue when some employers only want to employ a person who got Chinese language skills. The demand for business people who know Chinese language is skyrocketing nowadays. Chinese language skills are scarce in some companies. Why is it happen? For example, when it comes to Chinese New Year, you can help your Chinese friend to do their preparation before the eve. The effects, it will open your eyes widely and make you more appreciate the lifestyle of other cultures. You can also help someone who is in trouble. For example, if a Chinese resident is travelling to your country and asking for a direction to you, there will be no barrier to you to help them.

Speaking English gives you the access to a world of entertainment. This is because many of the world top films, book and music are published and produced in English. Therefore, by learning English you will have the access to a great wealth of entertainment and also have a better cultural understanding. If you can speak and understand English, you did not need to rely on translations and subtitles to enjoy your favorites books, song, films and TV shows. Learning English will also give you access to more of the internet. English is the language for the internet. Statistics has reported that around 565 million people are using the internet every day, and an estimated around 52 percents of the world’s most visited websites are displayed in English language. It important as it gives you access to over half the content on the internet. Knowing how to read English will allow you to access billions of pages of information which may not be otherwise available. By getting help from the internet, you will be able to have self-study. You can also participate in forums and discussion on the internet and make more new friends.

China was the hottest tourist markets with around 81,060,000 tourists per year. For people who like to shop with satisfy price and good quality, they will not miss the opportunity to travel to China. By learning Chinese language, it would be easier for you to communicate and bargaining price with the shopkeeper. Bargaining is the norm, especially in the market or small shops. Try to bargain whenever you shop. Be sure to bring a calculator to help you with conversion rates. If you make a counter offer, you should be prepared to buy the item if your offer is accepted. Carefully check the quality of your purchases to ensure there are no flaws and to distinguish genuine from fake. Always ask for receipt. It is a valid voucher if you need to return purchases. Furthermore, China customs sometimes will require receipts to be shown when you leave China. If the price that they offer is too expensive and you want to negotiate the price, you can ask them by saying “Tai gui le, pian yi dian ke yi ma?”. If the shopkeeper’s still refusing to reduce the price, don’t push them. You can just walk away, smile and say “bu yong jing, wo can can er yi”. In the most case, the shopkeeper will chase you back and sell with the price that you want. But don’t bargain with a price that too low to accept because they got a lot competitor there.

English is the language that most vacationers use with each other. As a universal language, English is often used in tourist areas. Even if you do not have a local tour guide, you will not face any problems for getting to the attractions that you want to visit. In addition, even bargaining for products and services becomes easier because you can communicate with the shopkeeper without any barrier. As you may know, Chinese language is extremely difficult language to learn because it has different written characters, pronunciation and tone that separated into four tones. The first reason is because Chinese is the most widely-spoken language in the world and will become Asia future Lingua Franca. Chinese language is the goal for doing business throughout the world. Chinese language will displace English language anytime soon as the preferred language for global business communication. It is also true that Chinese language will increasingly present on the global stage moving forward. Because of this, the British Council has included Chinese language on its ranking of the most important languages for the UK’s future. Second, people who speak Chinese language have a huge advantage to tapping into the Chinese market. Third, getting around is much easier and more enjoyable if you can speak the same language with the locals. People need to realize how life changing can be and how much of an impact of learning secondary language has upon someone because learning a secondary language will provide numerous advantages that will give a lot of beneficial for the whole life.
