The first article reviewed suggests that contrary to popular belief there is little evidence to suggest that music and emotion are interlinked due to the issues with different methodologies. A distinction has to be made between mood which is defined as either positive or negative feelings, whereas emotions are short lived and can be induced by mood. Arousal on the other hand is a physiological state that can be measured. This paper attempts to examine various different methodologies which seek to investigate the study of mood, arousal and emotion.
Konecni (2008) points out that there is an issue regarding whether music expresses emotion or whether music induces emotion. When a listener to music and cries, it cannot be perceived as being from joy or from sadness.
